Jayden Daniels Quietly Taking Over as Commanders' QB1

The Washington Commanders may not have made an official announcement yet, but rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels is quickly solidifying himself as the team's starting quarterback. According to ESPN's John Keim, Daniels has been taking the majority of first-team reps in practice, signaling that he is the clear frontrunner to start when the Commanders open their season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on September 8.

Daniels Gaining Trust, Impressing Teammates

While head coach Dan Quinn has yet to name a starter, Daniels has impressed teammates with his ability to read defenses, recognize coverage shifts, and adjust plays accordingly. His chemistry with top wide receiver Terry McLaurin has also been a highlight of training camp.

  • Keim noted that Daniels and McLaurin connected on a back-shoulder throw, with McLaurin making a one-handed grab, showcasing their growing rapport.
  • Tight end Zach Ertz has also been a frequent target of Daniels, demonstrating his comfort in the offense.

With McLaurin coming off his fourth straight 1,000-yard season, his connection with Daniels will be crucial to Washington’s offensive success.

Mariota’s Role as a Mentor?

Daniels' main competition for the starting role, veteran quarterback Marcus Mariota, signed a one-year, $6 million deal with the Commanders in March. While Mariota remains in the mix, his role may shift toward being a backup and mentor for the young QB.

Interestingly, Daniels and Mariota share a similar career trajectory:

  • Both were No. 2 overall picks after winning the Heisman Trophy—Mariota at Oregon (2014) and Daniels at LSU (2023).
  • Both entered the league as dual-threat quarterbacks with elite rushing ability.
  • Daniels (6'4", 210 lbs) and Mariota (6'4", 220 lbs as a rookie) have nearly identical physical profiles.

A viral social media post from the Commanders even showed a young Daniels wearing a Mariota jersey from his Tennessee Titans days, leading Mariota to jokingly remark:

"That picture makes me feel old."

If Daniels is indeed named the Week 1 starter, Mariota’s experience could still prove valuable as a mentor and reliable backup.

Commanders' Future at QB

The Commanders invested heavily in Daniels, making him the face of their franchise after selecting him with the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. His ability to quickly grasp the offense, build chemistry with key weapons, and showcase his mobility and decision-making will be key factors in Washington's success this season.

With Daniels taking the reins in practice, it seems only a matter of time before the Commanders officially name him the starting QB—perhaps even before their preseason opener against the New York Jets on August 10.
